2026 World Cup: Okumagba regrets Nigeria’s loss to Benin, boosts support for Super Eagles

Founder and President of the Super Eagles Supporters Club (SESC), Vincent Okumagba, has expressed sadness following the disappointing performance of the Super Eagles during the June FIFA window, describing the experience as one of his worst moments as a football fan.

Okumagba, who spoke to the sports media after returning from Abidjan where Nigeria lost to Benin, said: “This is one of the worst moments as a football fan after picking up just one point from two straight home and away matches. I felt they would give everything to get results in Uyo. We mobilized members across the country to be in Uyo for the match, just to witness the lackluster performance of the team.

“Losing to Benin Republic on Monday in an away match is more painful. Now the qualification for the World Cup has almost burned out. We are very disappointed. This is neither the team nor the result we were hoping for.»

However, the SESC boss commended the level of support shown to the Beninians during the World Cup qualifier in Abidjan while calling for unity among the already divided football clubs in Nigeria.

“We saw the unity that the Benin supporters showed when they all donned the same outfit. This is exactly what we need in this country right now and the football authority should do everything to achieve it.

“There are too many divisions and distractions in our football that have become a bottleneck in their cycle of progress. We’re disappointed, but we’re still hopeful that the Eagles will make things right in the next few games.»
