In 2021, O’Brien shocked fans when he revealed that he was once a very enthusiastic backup dancer at Sydney’s famous Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras.

The soberly dressed broadcaster, who usually anchors ABC’s morning news, posted a picture on social media of himself dancing at the event in 1999, with a link to a YouTube clip of the performance.

“ABC will rebroadcast Mardi Gras. Takes me back to 1999 when I became a backup dancer on the Danni show,” he tweeted.

A sweaty O’Brien revealing a ripped figure and dressed only in tiny gold shorts is on stage with other dancers for a performance by Danni Minogue.

‘RIVE ME TO LIFE. It should have come with a warning,” one fan wrote under the post on Twitter.

«Honestly unbelievable,» commented fellow ABC journalist Avani Dias.

O’Brien has been a journalist for more than 20 years and has been with the ABC since 1995.

He first worked for the ABC in Rockhampton and later in Brisbane as a reporter and presenter.

He later presented the 7pm ABC News programs in Queensland and New South Wales before moving to mornings on the new national broadcaster channels.
