AFCON 2023: We save our targets for the next round — Peseiro

The coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria, Jose Peseiro, has said his team is on target for the next round of the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast in 2023.

The Portuguese made the remarks in his post-match press conference in Abidjan on Monday following a scrappy 1-0 win over Guinea Bissau in their final Group A match.

The Super Eagles coach said he was happy with the 1-0 win while congratulating Equatorial Guinea for topping the table.

He said his side missed many scoring chances but claimed to have saved the goals for the next stage of the competition.

Peseiro explained that he did not fear or even care about Nigeria’s next opponent in the round of 16 as he focused on each match.

«Today we played very good football, but we missed chances to score a goal, which is not good for us.

“Our striker Victor Osimhen was not at his best, but I’m glad we got to the next stage.

“I want to congratulate Equatorial Guinea for leading the group with seven points after scoring many goals. Also, congratulations to my team for advancing to the next round.

“Today’s match was tough; we created four chances but couldn’t convert them. But I’m still happy that we’ve progressed to the next stage.

“I believe we have met our goals for the next round; we will definitely work on the finish before the next match.

«If you score goals in the next game, you go through to the next round,» he said.

Meanwhile, Guinea-Bissau handler Baciro Candé said they will continue to learn after the defeat to Nigeria.

«We will continue to learn because we played good football today. This tournament is full of surprises for all of us. It’s a great competition with great learning opportunities and I believe we can do better next time.

“Our first game was different than our second game and today’s game was different than our last game. I think our players should be congratulated and praised for their commitment and willingness to fight.

“In the matches we played, we showed that we have a great future; in three to four years our team will be more efficient,” he said.
