Alec Baldwin wants his ‘Rust’ trial for killing Halyna Hutchins to start ‘sooner rather than later’ to ‘minimize public shaming’

Alec Baldwin has filed a request to have his murder trial «sooner rather than later» in an effort to «minimize public shaming».

The 65-year-old actor was ordered to appear before a judge in New Mexico after prosecutors charged him for a second time last week in the shooting of filmmaker Halyna Hutchins in the movie «Rust.»

Court documents first obtained by TMZ found he has until Feb. 1 to file a formal plea. He consistently denied any responsibility for the shooting.

The documents reportedly included a request from Baldwin’s lawyers to exercise the actor’s constitutional right to a speedy trial.

Baldwin Spotted on Manhattan Streets After Second Charge in ‘Rust’ Tragedy

Camera operator Halyna Hutchins was fatally shot by Baldwin in the 2021 film ‘Rust’ with a gun the actor claims was loaded with blanks.

Baldwin may not have to physically travel to New Mexico for his Feb. 1 court date, as he has the option of appearing via phone or video conference.

His lawyers reportedly responded to the indictment in court filings almost immediately, arguing that continued media interest in his case could alter the jury’s ability to be impartial.

The filing said a speedy trial would «minimize public vilification and suspicion» and could «avoid the risk of proving his innocence that often arises after long delays in prosecution».

Baldwin was arraigned last week on a new charge of involuntary manslaughter by negligent use of a firearm, similar charges he faced before they were dropped last year.

The 65-year-old claims he was under the impression the gun he was given on the set of the film was a prop gun loaded with blanks.

He claims he never pulled the trigger and said the gun unexpectedly fired a live round when he pulled the hammer back and let go, ultimately killing Hutchins and injuring the film’s director.

Prosecutors countered that Baldwin should have personally checked that the gun was loaded with live rounds, even though such ammunition was already banned from movie sets.

After the second set of charges, his lawyers, Alex Spiro and Luke Nikas, said in a statement that they «look forward to our day in court.»

If convicted, Baldwin faces up to 18 months in prison.

The actor was seen lingering outside the parking lot of the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office after facing questions about the 2021 accidental shooting.

Film set gunwoman Hannah Gutierrez-Reed is scheduled to appear in court in February, where she pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter.

Prosecutors accused her of failing to properly check the gun’s ammunition and of allowing live rounds on the set of the western.

Baldwin was not seen for nearly a week after the latest accusation.

When he decided to step out, his wife Hilaria was seen wearing a very distracting outfit in an attempt to allow her husband to arrive at their Manhattan apartment unnoticed.

An insider warns prosecutors in New Mexico that they «have no idea what they’re getting into,» as A-lister attorney Alex Spiro prepares to help Baldwin fight the charges.

While Baldwin may be sweating as he faces charges he thought were gone, the best defense attorney he recruited to lead his case never lost in court.

Alex Spiro, sought after for celebrities facing legal problems, has been hailed as a «force of nature» and is recognized for his flawless record on the jury.

A source told that Spiro will be throwing his weight behind Baldwin, saying: ‘The prosecutors in New Mexico have no idea what’s in store for them…Alex is a force of nature’.
