Auburn running back Brian Battie could be permanently paralyzed after ‘senseless’ shooting that killed his 24-year-old brother Tommie

Auburn running back Brian Battie could face a grim prognosis after the «senseless» shooting that killed his brother Tommie Battie earlier this month.

The college football star could end up permanently paralyzed, according to court documents obtained by the Tampa Bay Times.

A probable cause affidavit from the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office revealed that Brian and Tommie were «walking through the area» when a man named Darryl Brookins pulled out a gun and fired at them.

Authorities accuse Brookins of firing 12 or 13 shots from a few feet away while about 200 people were in or near the parking lot at the time.

Brian, 22, who is still in hospital after the May 18 incident, is ‘doing better’ despite the prognosis.

«(To) honor the family, I don’t want to go into too much, but they certainly appreciate all the prayers,» Auburn coach Hugh Freeze told reporters at the SEC spring meeting on Tuesday.

«It’s been a difficult time for the whole family, but it seems to be getting better every day,» he added

Deputies responding to the incident «observed a large crowd with multiple gunshot victims,» according to a news release from the sheriff’s office.

Officials said the shooting appeared to be an isolated incident, although it was not revealed what sparked the violence.

Brookins, 28, was arrested last week and charged with murder, attempted murder and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

He allegedly killed 24-year-old Tommie and injured several people.

Freeze had previously urged fans to ‘pray’ after revealing that Brian was still in a critical condition, days after the incident.

“The chestnut family. Please continue to pray for Brian Battie. Blackout last night and he’s still on the ventilator,” Freeze wrote on X last week.

A description of a GoFundMe page set up to benefit Battie’s family sadly confirmed that his brother had died.

«On May 18, 2024, the Battie family received the most devastating news that Tommie and Brian were the victims of a senseless shooting,» the message began.

“It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that we share the unexpected passing of Tommie Battie IV (Pooh). Brian Battie remains in critical condition at a local hospital.»

Brian rushed for 1,842 yards and scored 10 touchdowns in three seasons playing at South Florida.

He transferred to Auburn for the 2023 season and rushed 51 times for 227 yards and a touchdown.
