Brighton and Hove Albion are closing in on 31-year-old Fabian Hurzeler becoming their new head coach after securing a Governing Body Work Permit (GBE).

An official approach has been made to his Bundesliga club St Pauli and negotiations are ongoing.

Hurzeler would become the youngest permanent head coach to do so in the Premier League if all goes well.

Brighton have been looking for the right candidate to replace Roberto de Zerbi as the Italian left at the end of the season and have held talks with a number of suitors including their former boss Graham Potter, Steve Cooper and Malmö’s Henrik Rydstrom.

Another target, Kieran McKenna, has decided to sign a new contract with Ipswich.

He had a lower league playing career with Bayer Munich’s reserves, where he was a teammate of Borussia Dortmund’s captain Emre Can, and similarly with Hoffenheim and 1860 Munich before quitting at just 23 years of age. He started coaching and won the UEFA title. For licenses in the 30

He has no release clause in his contract with St Pauli, but a deal was put in place to allow him to hold talks if a top club agreed.
