Bruce Lehrmann receives huge bill from Channel Ten after failed defamation case

Channel Ten sued Bruce Lehrmann for $2.5 million in his failed defamation case.

Lehrmann suffered a massive legal loss against the network and Lisa Wilkinson in April when Federal Court Judge Michael Lee found that, on the balance of probabilities, he raped Brittany Higgins in Parliament House in March 2019.

He sued for defamation over the February 2021 episode of The Project, during which Ms Higgins first aired her rape claims in an interview with Wilkinson.

The former employee was not named in the broadcast but claimed that friends and colleagues were able to identify him as Ms Higgins’s abuser.

As the loser in the lawsuit, Lehrmann will be expected to cough up at least some of the costs of the trial.

Daily Mail Australia understands the hefty bill was sent to Lehrmann ahead of a costs hearing in the Federal Court at 9.30am on Monday.

Earlier in May, the court heard that Lehrmann did not have an undercover financier who funded the case.

His lawyer, Paul Svilans, told the court that his client had nothing to show because there were no agreements.

The only settlement Lehrmann had was with the law firm Mark O’Brien Legal for defamation, which conducted a no-win, no-fee case for him.

Judge Lee said: «The two key points are, yes, a lot of costs have been incurred, but they cannot be recovered because Mr Lehrmann … lost.»
