Cam McCarthy’s father is reliving the horrific moment he learned of his son’s death as AFL players gathered for the football star’s moving funeral following his death aged just 29.

Some of the AFL’s biggest names have paid tribute to Cam McCarthy as his devastated father made several emotional revelations during a moving funeral on Wednesday.

The Fremantle Dockers and GWS Giants star was laid to rest at Fremantle Cemetery in front of more than 100 mourners following his tragic death on May 8, with close friend and West Coast star Tom Barrass acting as one of the pallbearers wearing ‘CM’ tops displayed on them.

Other stars past and present to attend the ceremony included Dockers captain Alex Pearce, his teammates Luke Ryan, Sean Darcy and Michael Walters, as well as former Fremantle star Aaron Sandilands and Western Bulldogs cult hero Danny Southern.

Footy stars, including McCarthy’s great pal Tom Barrasse, acted as pallbearers as about 100 mourners paid their respects in Fremantle on Wednesday.

McCarthy’s father Graham gave a moving eulogy in which he recalled the moment the family learned of Cam’s death while they were on holiday in Coral Bay, more than 1000km north of Perth.

«We were on the phone at about 5.30pm that night (May 8) and had a few beers in the afternoon,» he said, according to The West.

Mr McCarthy went on to thank AFL teams who paid their respects to his son on the field in the immediate aftermath of the tragedy.

«I’d like to thank GWS, the Dockers, Essendon and Sydney for the games that were played the weekend after Cam’s death,» he told mourners.

«To the Eagles players who also wore armbands with the support staff and other players around the country… (I) watched a lot of football that weekend and it was pretty moving.»

McCarthy’s sister Hannah reminded the crowd why her brother is so great to be around.

«Our unique, charismatic and larger-than-life brother, Cam graced every room he walked into with his contagious smile and bubbly personality, and I have no doubt that everyone here can vouch for that,» she said.

“Cam, (sister) Jess and I were best friends and luckily we did everything together at the end of our lives.

“In his free time, Cam liked to hang around us and his best friends with ice cold beers and what he would describe as fat conversations.

«He was an athlete, a singer, a dancer, sometimes a rapper…but most of all, he was a light in every room and the world is so much darker and our hearts so much heavier without him.»

Barrasse was also singled out by McCarthy’s father, who paid a heart-wrenching tribute to his great friend shortly after his death.

The two soccer stars met at Western Australia’s under-18 team training.

«They just created this bond that’s still going strong to this day,» McCarthy said.

“Forever grateful, man. He loved you to death.’

McCarthy was drafted by the Giants with the No. 14 pick in 2013 and managed one game in his debut season.

He played a total of 49 games for the Fremantle Dockers and 21 games for GWS, after being drafted from South Fremantle.

Headlines followed when he left the Giants at the end of the 2015 season, opting to opt out of the final year of his contract before being traded to Fremantle.

McCarthy was placed on indefinite leave from the Giants in January 2016 to be closer to family.

The Fremantle-born star would play a further 49 games in four seasons with the Dockers, kicking 63 goals.
