Two acclaimed actors will star together in Steven Soderbergh’s spy thriller.

Cate Blanchett and Michael Fassbender are now attached to lead the cast of Black Bag, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Blanchett, 54, last appeared on screen in the Australian drama The New Boy (2023) and has three new projects either filming or in some stage of post-production.

As for Fassbender, 46, he last starred in Taiko Waititi’s sports comedy-drama Another Goal Wins (2023).

Details of their new pairing in Black Bag have been largely kept under wraps, however the outlet noted that Black Bag will be set in the UK.

Cate Blanchett (54) and Michael Fassbender (46) will star in the upcoming thriller Black Bag, which will be directed by Steven Soderbergh.

The team behind Black Bag is currently looking for funding and a distribution company.

Production is set to begin filming in London, England, but no deal has yet been made.

Soderbergh will direct the feature project, written by David Keopp, who is considered by many in the industry to be one of the more established screenwriters in Hollywood.

The director and writer have a long history of collaborations, including the tech-thriller KIMI, starring Zoe Kravitz, and the thriller Presence, which opens Friday at the Sundance Film Festival.

Both Blanchett and Fassbender have worked with Soderbergh in the past.

The actress, who hails from Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, starred in his noir The Good German (2008) as well as Ocean’s 8, which he produced and was part of his Ocean’s 11 franchise.

Meanwhile, the native of Heidelberg, West Germany appeared in Soderbergh’s action film Haywire (2011), which centered on MMA fighter Gina Carano.

Soderbergh, 61, who is set to direct Black Bag, has worked with both Blanchett and Fassbender in the past; the filmmaker can be seen at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival

Blanchett is also set to star in the sci-fi action comedy Borderlands, alongside Kevin Hart, Jamie Lee Curtis, Jack Black, Bobby Lee, Édgar Ramírez, Ariana Greenblatt, Florian Munteanu and Gina Gershon.

The Oscar winner has also voiced the role of a tiger in the upcoming film Euphoria.

She also recently filmed the dark comedy Rumors, which also stars Alicia Vikander, Charles Dance, Roy Dupuis, Denis Ménochet, Nikki Amuka-Bird, Rolando Ravello, Takehiro Hira and Zlatko Burić.

Fassbender has two new films of his own now in post-production, including the Irish film Kneecap, which stars Mo Chara, Móglaí Bap, DJ Próvaí, Simone Kirby and Josie Walker.

He also directed the martial arts comedy Kung Fury 2, a sequel to David Sandberg’s Kung Fury (2015), also starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Ralf Moeller, Alexandra Shipp and Jorma Taccone.
