Chelsea join race to sign £16million Argentine teen star – but Blues must brace for battle with Man United for signature

Manchester United face a battle to land the Argentine superstar youngster as Chelsea join the race to sign the defender.

The Red Devils have struggled with a number of problems at the back this season due to a high number of injuries and poor defending.

With Raphael Varane already confirming his departure from the club, United are in the hunt for a new centre-back and have reportedly set their sights on Boca Juniors star Aaron Anselmino.

The Red Devils have been tracking the 19-year-old for several months, while Italian giants AC Milan are also interested in the centre-back.

However, Chelsea are seemingly ready to do battle with United in their bid to secure the teenager’s signature.

Both Chelsea and Manchester United are reportedly keen on signing Boca Juniors’ 19-year-old defender Aaron Anselmino.

Since taking over from Todd Boehly in 2022, the Blues have been attacking the South American market, bringing in the likes of Argentine midfielder Enzo Fernandez and his center partner Moises Caicedo, who hails from Ecuador.

The Brazilian duo of Deivid Washington and Andrey Santos is just another example of Chelsea’s love of bringing in young talent from South America.

Now their eyes are on Anselmino, who made his senior debut for Boca just 12 months ago.

If Chelsea and United were to pry the youngster out of his native country, it could cost more than £16m.

Anselmino originally had a $20m (£15.72m) release clause when he renewed his contract with Boca in January, however a month later his terms changed again and the clause was removed.

Chelsea already have a wealth of South American talent with Argentina's Enzo Fernandez and Ecuador's Moises Caicedo running the middle of the park.

The Argentine club appear to believe the young defender is worth more than their previous valuation, with journalist Fafi Perez claiming that Chelsea are the latest club to show an interest in the Argentine centre-back.

With both the Blues and United showing strong interest in the youngster, their battle to secure his signature means Boca’s asking price should not be a barrier to any deal.
