Chelsea Women confirm Sonia Bompastor as Emma Hayes’ successor

Chelsea Women on Wednesday appointed Lyon manager Sonia Bompastor as the club’s new head coach on a four-year contract.

The 43-year-old succeeds Emma Hayes, who led the Blues to 14 major trophies during a 12-year spell in charge.

Bompastor enjoyed similar success in France, leading Lyon to seven trophies in the past three seasons.

«I will put everything into this new project to fulfill the ambitions of the club, staff and players,» Bompastor said in a club statement.

“I hope to live up to Emma’s legacy and continue the work that has been done in recent years. Let the adventure begin.»

Hayes, who has become the coach of the US women’s national team, signed off in style as Chelsea claimed their fifth straight title on the final day of the season earlier this month.

Bompastor fell short of his fairytale ending at Lyon when they lost the Champions League final 2-0 to Barcelona last weekend.
