Consumer tech is poised to make a comeback among the unicorns, but maybe not just yet

Ten years later Cowboy Ventures Founder Aileen Lee they gave unicorns a nicknameshe and her team are back with a new analysis of private companies worth more than a billion dollars.

So much has changed in unicorn land since 2013 that it deserves as thorough a recap as you can read here. But there’s one point worth zooming in on: the transition to enterprises and what might happen next.

As the number of unicorns grew from 39 to more than 532, Cowboy discovered that their very nature had changed. «The pendulum has swung heavily toward entrepreneurship, with 78% of unicorns today focused on B2B, a reversal from 2013,» wrote Lee and her team member Allegra Simon.

But spending more than a decade in tech has taught you something: to be ready for the pendulum to swing back. Hence Cowboy’s prediction that «given the difficult transition to entrepreneurship,» we can «hope and expect more exciting consumer unicorns to be born in the coming years.»
