On another day, Dominic Solanke would have left the Vitality Stadium with a hat-trick and was on 21 goals heading into the final game of the season.

And yet, the Bournemouth striker’s towering header and a quiet day for his Brentford counterpart Ivan Toney did little to damage Solanke’s international hopes ahead of England assistant Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink.

While Solanke is enjoying his breakout season and is level with Ollie Watkins on 19 league goals, Toney has gone 11 without conceding a goal.

It’s not how he would have liked to approach the summer at the Euros, yet Brentford boss Thomas Frank has backed Toney to fend off Solanke and keep the England jersey he was handed in March. “I know I’m biased, but I’d pick Toney,” he said.

“When you go to the Euros you need to be fit and perform at a good level and sometimes it only takes a moment and you are at your best.

Dominic Solanke further staked his claim for a place in England’s Euro squad after scoring his 19th Premier League goal of the season against Brentford.
