Ederson is ruled out of the Copa America after breaking his eye socket in Man City’s win over Tottenham as Brazil’s final squad is confirmed.

Ederson will miss this year’s Copa America due to an eye injury.

The goalkeeper fractured his eye socket after colliding with Cristiano Romero in Manchester City’s 2-0 win over Tottenham.

Brazil manager Dorival Junior dropped Ederson from his squad and named 34-year-old Sao Paulo custodian Rafael in his place.

It’s a huge blow for Brazil’s Ederson and their new manager, who has just two games under his belt.

Stefan Ortega came on for Ederson against Spurs, made a season-long stoppage against Son Heung-min, played against West Ham and will start Saturday’s FA Cup final against Manchester United.

Medical staff rushed to Ederson’s aid after he lay concussed following Romero’s accidental blow to the head.

Despite the disturbing scenes of the players frantically waving above them, they could see that he was conscious and communicative. The Brazilian confirmed to them that at no point did he get lost and wanted to continue, which he did for a few minutes.

It seemed misguided in hindsight as the 30-year-old hooked shortly after, though he was furious with his takedown.

City doctor Max Sala remarked to Pep Guardiola that the eye could swell quickly and the manager replaced him with Stefano Ortega.

Sources described Ederson’s eye «looking like a mess» in the dressing room and tests have since revealed a small fracture.

Ortega, whose stunning late save on Heung-min Son could become the defining image of the title race, has been in superb form in 18 games this season.

The German, who has first-choice takeover aspirations, has just one year left on his contract and his future remains uncertain until the summer.

City have so far failed to successfully negotiate a new contract with the 31-year-old, who would start the all-Manchester FA Cup final at Wembley regardless of Ederson’s fitness.

«One-on-one, he’s one of the best goalkeepers I’ve seen in my life,» Guardiola said after the Spurs game. “He’s so reliable. An incredible decision by our goalkeeper coach (Xabi Mancisidor) to bring him.

«Ortega saves the day, otherwise Arsenal are champions – that’s the reality. The margins are so tight.’
