A police officer was taken to hospital after he was allegedly stabbed in broad daylight.

The officer was allegedly attacked at the Anzac Memorial in Hyde Park on Elizabeth Street in Sydney at around 1.30pm on Sunday.

After suffering a non-life-threatening head injury, he was taken to St. Vincent.

A NSW Police spokesman confirmed a 33-year-old man had been arrested and taken to the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital for assessment.

A witness told Daily Mail Australia that the Good Samaritan stopped his van and chased the alleged knifeman before police arrived at the scene.

Footage from the scene showed around 20 police and paramedics treating the man before he was strapped onto a stretcher and put into an ambulance.

A witness said the chaotic scene was «well under control» within 20 minutes after plainclothes police arrived in unmarked cars and two squad vans.

Police were seen manually opening and closing what appeared to be a small flick or folding knife before placing it in an evidence bag.

A police spokeswoman said there was «no ongoing threat to the public».
