Erik ten Hag reveals forgotten £15m defender trained ONCE for Man United this season

Erik ten Hag has revealed that the forgotten Manchester United defender has not trained once this season due to his problems with a knee meniscus injury.

The Red Devils have been hampered by injuries in defense this term, which has led to Casemiro deputizing at centre-back in recent weeks.

United were left short-handed at left-back, with both Malacia and Luke Shaw spending much of the season on the sidelines.

Malacia, 24, has not played a minute this season, the £13m defender’s last game for the Netherlands against Croatia in the UEFA Nations League semi-final last June.

Speaking to Dutch network Voetbal International, The Hag said: “Tyrell Malacia has not played a single minute of football this season. In fact, he didn’t even spend a moment on the training ground. We signed him as our backup for Luke Shaw.’

The Athletic reported last month that Malacia had breached United’s advice when he opted to undergo knee surgery last summer following pre-season discomfort.

United suggested a surgeon in London, but Malacia wanted his own surgeon in the Netherlands to perform the operation, they say.

The club accepted his request and the operation was carried out out of sight of the club.

In the fall, as Malacia slowly returned to fitness, scans revealed that small fragments of cartilage remained around the meniscus.

Malacia was given the option to undergo a second surgery to remove the debris or continue with a rehabilitation program.

In November, the decision was made to go under the knife again by the same surgeon, but this time with the supervision of United representatives.

However, this meant Malacia had to start his rehabilitation from scratch, with United announcing in December that he had suffered a «setback» but would «return to action early next year».

The Hag has publicly stated that he understands that Malacia could return in January, which is why he decided to shorten Sergio Reguilon’s loan spell.

But Malacia is still not back so United have to field an emergency left-back, with Shaw still out.

The Hag, meanwhile, declared Shaw «the best left-back in the world» but insisted the Englishman would never be able to play a full season again in his career.

«Luke Shaw is the best left-back in the world. This guy is so good. But he suffered a terrible injury early in his career and because of that he will NEVER be able to play 60 games in a season,” Ten Hag said.
