Fitness influencer Ashy Bines reveals the bizarre health reason she refuses to use the microwave – but does science agree?

Controversial fitness influencer Ashy Bines has revealed the strange reason why she hasn’t owned a microwave in over a decade.

The Queensland mother-of-two shared her concerns about the home appliance with fans during a Q&A on Instagram on Saturday, saying she believes microwaves destroy the nutritional value of food.

“Personally, I believe they kill all living nutrients. (There are) much better and healthier options to reheat food. Radiation too,” she replied to a fan who asked why she didn’t own a microwave.

“It’s been 13 years since we’ve owned one (I used one maybe three times during our last rental). Each to their own, and I know most families use them and they’re super comfortable – but I’d just encourage you to look into it more as well. No judgement—do whatever works for you!” she continued.

Ashy went on to say that she ‘loves’ using her fryer and pan to heat up food.

While social media is awash with claims that microwaves strip food of nutrients, in reality all cooking methods — such as steaming, roasting or air-frying — cause some nutrients to break down, as heat can change their chemical structure.

This is especially true if the food is cooked for too long or at a very high temperature.

Because microwaves cook food faster, they may actually preserve vitamins better than other cooking methods, according to Harvard research.

According to a study published in Food Chemistry in 2002, microwaving is also better at retaining fiber, which is vital for gut health, compared to pressure cooking vegetables.

Ashy’s concerns about «radiation» were also revealed.

Microwave ovens use microwaves – a form of electromagnetic radiation – to target and excite water molecules in food.

Thanks to the rapidly rotating water molecules, the food heats up quickly.

While long-term exposure to radiation can be harmful – there are regulations on how much emissions can come from a microwave oven – and it’s well below any dangerous level.

Furthermore, no research has ever been done to show that microwave ovens cause long-term harm to humans.
