Footy legend Anthony Stevens recalls shocking incident that left him an inch from death – but forgot to mention Wayne Carey’s involvement

Two-time AFL Premier League player Anthony Stevens opened up around the time a window pane left him inches from death after it fell and hit him as he left a pub.

Stevens, 53, was severely cut from the corner of his mouth to his shoulder when glass landed on him outside a North Melbourne hotel in 2000.

The bizarre accident happened as he was leaving the Redback Brewery Hotel, which was co-owned by his then pal Wayne Carey – just two years before Carey’s affair with Stevens’ ex-wife Kelli became public, forcing the big man to leave the club in disgrace.

Stevens went to the pub after the Kangaroos lost and had just one beer with his friends before leaving the establishment through a side door.

«I heard the bang and I felt this force hit me in the side of my face – so it was basically a whole glass window that came down and hit me from there in the back of my head,» Stevens recalled on Channel Seven’s The Front. Bar on Wednesday night — while refusing to mention Carey.

“It cut two major arteries and basically they said it was an inch from the major artery and if it hit I would have bled to death.

“But I was two seconds across the road from the Royal Melbourne Hospital.

Former football star Shannon Grant’s brother got into his car and rushed Stevens to the hospital for treatment.

The premiership winner was sidelined for more than three months after the incident in which he lost two liters of blood.

«If I was 10 minutes from the hospital I would have bled to death,» he told Fox Footy in 2015.

“The second day a specialist came in and evaluated the whole scenario and basically said I’m going to have to get my nerves back together.

“He pretty much said he didn’t know how lucky he was going to be. He said I would probably have a droopy shoulder and a droopy lip for the rest of my life and definitely not play football.

«I wasn’t really interested in football at the time, but I ended up having surgery and he was able to put it all back together … I ended up playing 14 weeks later.»

Carey and Stevens’ friendship was ended by a cheating episode when ‘The King’ left the North for the Adelaide Crows.

The pair met on the field when the teams played in 2003, then met again off the field in 2022.

They reportedly had to be separated when they crossed paths in a Melbourne pub in August that year while in town for the 1996 Prime Ministers’ Meeting.

Witnesses claimed Carey accused Stevens of «talking behind his back and telling people he can’t be contacted and not bothering to catch up with him, but then he’s fine in person», according to a report on SEN radio.
