Former Grand Slam champion rages at officials in X-rated fury after being forced to play in wet conditions at the Italian Open … and then lashing out at the crowd who booed her

Former Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin was furious with Italian Open officials after she was forced to play on despite wet conditions – before turning her anger on spectators who booed her.

Russian-American Kenin, who won her first ever Grand Slam at a Melbourne major in 2020, defeated Lucia Bronzetti 6-3, 6-2 on Wednesday, but not before launching into an X-ray blast over the court.

After losing a break point early in the first set, Kenin returned to her seat to complain to the umpire that the surface was wet so it could be played in the rain.

The umpire told her that «the course is not unplayable» before the match supervisor came to confirm her decision and told Kenin that play would continue and if the conditions became dangerous they would stop «immediately».

But Kenina didn’t take kindly to being told to keep playing as she slammed a towel on her tennis bag and raged: «Damn stupid people,» before storming back onto the court with her racket.

After her opponent knocked the shot into the net, Kenin turned and shouted: ‘F*** you!’ – with the audience behind the local favorite Bronzetti.

She was later vindicated in her complaints about the conditions as play was stopped briefly due to rain a few points later.

Kenin recovered from her outburst to win in straight sets and will now face Tunisian star Ons Jabeur in the second round.

The Italian Open is notorious for booing players after Andy Murray was subjected to jeers last year after an altercation with umpire Mohamed Lahyani during a match with Fabio Fognini.

The Scot became upset over a ball that was not called back and shown to the officials, with fans booing him.

After he wrote on Instagram: ‘Stadium full of Italians booing and whistling thought I was trying to trick Fabio because Mo couldn’t read the mark right cheers mate.’
