Fox’s telecast of the 75th Emmy Awards dropped to a new low

Absence didn’t make the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards heartier.

After a four-month delay due to actor and writer strikes, Fox’s Monday telecast averaged 4.3 million viewers, down 27% from its previous all-time low of 5.9 million viewers in 2022, according to preliminary Nielsen data. . The final numbers, which will be released on Wednesday, are expected to be higher, but the show’s status as the least-watched series is unlikely to change.

NBC aired the previous Emmy ceremony on September 12, 2022. The awards usually air in late August or early September.

Along with the delay, the drop may be due to awards show fatigue, as the Golden Globe Awards aired Jan. 7 on CBS and the Critics Choice Awards aired Sunday on the CW. This meant many trips to the Emmy podium by the same cast members celebrated on all three telecasts.

The four major broadcast stations take turns telecasting the Emmys.

The Fox telecast from the Peacock Theater — produced by Jesse Collins Entertainment and hosted by comedian Anthony Anderson — attempted to bridge the delta between older traditional TV viewers and the current generation that has flocked to streaming video platforms for its scripted programming.

Emmy voters mostly celebrated acclaimed streaming hits like Netflix’s limited series «Beef» and FX and Hulu’s «The Bear,» which won for outstanding comedy and in three acting categories. Perennial Emmy powerhouse HBO also had a strong night with “Succession,” which picked up three acting wins and trophies for writing and outstanding drama.

But hosts and comedies have embraced classic television over the decades, reuniting the surviving cast members of such hits as «Cheers,» «All in the Family,» «Martin» and «Ally McBeal.»

While these shows may be unfamiliar to younger viewers, the proliferation of streaming platforms has made it easier than ever for them to sample them if they’re so inclined.

The show drew favorable reviews from critics. But the contest was as impressive as the final game of NFL Wild Card weekend, where the Tampa Bay Buccaneers beat the Philadelphia Eagles aired opposite the Emmys on ABC and ESPN.
