General Catalyst is considering the acquisition of Venture Highway to strengthen its focus on India

US-based General Catalyst, a major investor in the region, is reportedly in talks to acquire Venture Highway, an early-stage venture capital (VC) firm in India, according to three sources familiar with the matter. Negotiations are in the preliminary stages and details may evolve closer to completion. If not Venture Highway, General Catalyst could explore another VC firm in India to deepen its presence in the world’s third-largest startup ecosystem, an anonymous source revealed.

Months after Venture Highway co-founder Samir Sood stepped down as a partner, there is speculation about a potential acquisition. Known for backing prominent startups like Meesho, Cred, MPL and Sharechat, Venture Highway is said to be the focus of General Catalyst to expand its presence in India.

Regarding the potential acquisition, it is noted, «If talks go through, Venture Highway will act as General Catalyst’s investment arm in India and will continue to pursue seed deals in India.» The move departs from the traditional exit strategy, with Venture Highway in in the event of an acquisition, it will retain its role as an investment entity within General Catalyst.

Venture Highway, which recently sold a portion of Meesho to WestBridge, is recognized for its strategic investments, which typically do not exceed $3 million in the early stages of a company’s development.

General Catalyst has a history of raising venture capital firms on a country-by-country basis, as seen with the inclusion of Berlin-based La Famiglia in October 2023. The move is in line with General Catalyst’s increased focus on India as the firm announced plans to invest $100 million in India. startups last year. Notably, on January 18, General Catalyst led a $2.75 million funding round for Jeh Aerospace, demonstrating its continued commitment to the Indian market.
