Gregor Haas: Police reveal evidence they say links superstar father Payne Haas to notorious Mexican drug cartel – as he could face Indonesian firing squad

Police claimed Gregor Johann Haas, the father of NRL stars Payne and Klese Haas, was involved with a notorious Mexican drug cartel before he was arrested in the Philippines last week.

Gregor Johann Haas (46) was arrested on Wednesday by police in Cebu City, Philippines.

He is expected to be extradited to Jakarta to face drug-trafficking charges in Indonesia. If convicted, he faces life in prison or execution by firing squad.

The Brisbane Broncos have vowed to stand by their star prop Payne as Gold Coast Titans forward Klese sent a message of support to his father after scoring against Newcastle on Saturday.

Philippine police revealed that Haas is accused of transporting methamphetamines to Indonesia from Mexico, hidden inside ceramic tiles.

The drugs were reportedly seized by Indonesian authorities, leading to serious charges against him.

Klese Haas paid tribute to his father on Saturday by inscribing 'Dad' along with 'Chace' for his late brother on his wristband, linking them together after he scored against Newcastle.

Philippine authorities said Haas allegedly worked with the Sinaloa drug cartel.

«The drugs were seized by Indonesian authorities who later determined, based on testimony obtained from arrested drug couriers, that the packages were sent by Haas from Guadalajara, Mexico,» Philippine authorities said.

Indonesian officials accused Haas of trying to smuggle more than five kilograms of methamphetamine hidden in tiles into the country on December 11, 2023.

The Sinaloa Cartel, also known as the Guzmán-Zambada Organization or the Pacific Cartel, is a notorious international crime syndicate based in Culiacán, Sinaloa, Mexico.

It is one of the oldest, largest and most violent criminal groups in Mexico, maintaining a strong influence despite the arrest of its founder Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman and his son.

Philippine Immigration Commissioner Norman Tansingco hailed the coordinated efforts between local, Indonesian and Interpol investigators as «a major achievement for the Bureau of Immigration (BI) in its ongoing efforts to force wanted foreign criminals out of the country.»

However, the Philippine government has not yet confirmed whether it will allow Haas’ extradition without assurances that he will not face the death penalty if convicted.

Haas is currently being held in Manila awaiting deportation proceedings.

ANU international law professor Donald Rothwell suggested Haas could be used as a bargaining chip in ongoing Philippine attempts to secure the return of Mary Jane Veloso, who has been on death row in Indonesia for more than a decade.

In 2010, Veloso traveled to Indonesia under the pretense of working as a maid, but was caught with heroin in her luggage. She claims the recruiters hid drugs in her bag without her knowledge, which is central to her plea for freedom.

Her case has attracted considerable media attention in the Philippines, and President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is facing pressure to negotiate her return.

Rothwell also said Haas could challenge his extradition in Philippine courts, which could delay Indonesia’s efforts.

The last Australians executed in Indonesia were Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran in 2015.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on Sunday reiterated Australia’s opposition to the death penalty.

«We will continue diplomatic representations in an appropriate manner,» he said.

“One of the things the Australian government is doing is we’re standing up for the Australian people, we’re making appropriate statements through diplomatic channels. And we will do it again on this occasion.”
