How Hailee Steinfeld’s ‘Across the Spider-Verse’ Came to Life Again and Again

Voicing a character can be as isolating as you’d expect – flying in from God knows where as Hailee Steinfeld and try to get into the mindset of a character who at best only exists as a stick figure. You are alone in the cabin, reacting not only to the artificial world, but also to someone reading the lines of what will eventually become your teammates.

But it doesn’t work that way Camp Powers or his colleague Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse directors Joaquim dos Santos and Justin K. Thompson they were interested in doing things. Powers, who won an Oscar for co-directing Pixar’s Soul, was actively involved in the recording booth with his actors, to the point that Steinfeld credits him with the performance she was able to pull off as Gwen Stacy. Although Powers insists that “no Shea Whigham(Whigham voices Gwen’s father in the film), he knew there was a lot to Steinfeld’s performance. Although Shameik Moore returns as franchise hero Miles Morales, who must overcome his own adventures and emotional obstacles, Steinfeld’s Gwen Stacy is much more distinctive than she was in 2019. Into the spider-verse – and such a powerful character that the world she inhabits literally transforms based on her emotions.

So how do you explain to an actor a world that is like a «mood ring» when the technology to animate that world hasn’t been invented yet? Powers and Steinfeld reunited this week Little golden men break down their creative process and what they take away from the response Through Spider-Verse to his work on the upcoming third film.

**Vanity Fair: **Could you start with how you started working together? Hailee, you were part of the first movie, but Kemp, you jumped into the sequel. Do you remember that first meeting?

Camp Powers: I just remember our first meeting was Hailee’s first recording session. This part was an opinion on what the movie was going to be, because this movie was so visually different from the first one, I explained a lot about Gwen’s world, especially because Gwen is much more forward in this movie and her world is basically this circle of mood. It was hard because the technology wasn’t ready yet, so we had like a couple of technical samples, some visual development that we showed Hailee. And then we just got down to it. Of course, the way these animated movies are made, they were basically just random scenes from the entire movie – you could ask Hailee, but I’m sure it must have made sense what the hell the story was supposed to be.

She doesn’t know, but I was a little scared because I was just watching Real guts a few days before our recording session. When Hailee came in, she had that Mattie energy that she stepped in like a pro. The only thing that gives it away is that she had her two Yorkshire terriers with her. She let them out in the booth and they walked around and she just said, okay, let’s do it. There was a bit of intimidation, but it dissipated very quickly.
