A series of fascinating redesigned maps have revealed the most popular forms of exercise in countries around the world – and it’s dance workouts that are the world’s number one way of keeping fit.

The maps, which include a main global map and regional breakdowns, are color-coded to indicate the types of exercise that people in each country like the most, with results generated by analyzing the types of exercise people search for the most on Google using a master list of 200 workouts.

‘Dancing’ is the most popular exercise in 51 countries, including Finland, Egypt, Kenya, Botswana and Papua New Guinea.

Pilates is top in 40 countries, including the UK, Portugal, Poland, USA, Australia and New Zealand.

The research was carried out by PureGym, which said «dancing is a fun and affordable way to exercise».

Georgia Boyle, personal trainer at PureGym Edinburgh, added: “Dancing is a fantastic form of exercise for a number of reasons. Not only is it a fun full-body workout, but it’s also a wonderful form of creative expression, stress relief, and above all, a form of exercise that can bring people together.

“Easily accessible for all ages, it’s so easy to start dancing – try a class in person or at home, or even put on some music and dance around the house.

“I think one of the biggest barriers to dance is the feeling that they ‘have two left feet’ or that they won’t be a technical pro. However, the only thing that matters is that you move and enjoy the music.”

In second place, PureGym Pilates for the uninitiated explained that it «focuses on improving strength, flexibility and balance.»
