I wish you weren’t here? Jordan Henderson is joining wife Rebecca on holiday in the Algarve as his old England team-mates jet off to Germany for the Euros – after being cut by Gareth Southgate.

It’s a case of what could have been for Jordan Henderson, who was snapped on holiday in Portugal at the same time his former England team-mates arrived in Germany for Euro 2024.

The man who has been Gareth Southgate’s mainstay for so long will not take part in the tournament after being left out of the 33-man provisional squad named last month.

Henderson’s decision to pursue the vast riches on offer in the Saudi professional league eventually backfired on him, despite trying to save his Tree Lions career by moving to Ajax in January.

Gareth Southgate’s 26-man squad touched down in Germany on Monday, while Henderson was photographed with wife Rebecca in the Algarve resort.

The pair looked relaxed in their exercise gear before leaving in a golf cart.

Even at the age of 33, Henderson would certainly be a strong contender for a place in the final squad if he was still playing regularly for Liverpool. Such was the strength of Southgate’s belief in his ability.

His £350,000-a-week Saudi dream at Al-Ettifaq turned into a nightmare after intense criticism from LGBTQ+ activists as his family sought to settle in the Middle East.

Henderson attempted to remedy the situation – and revive his Euro hopes – by signing for Ajax in January. But he found himself in a poor side that could only finish fifth in the Eredivisie amid turmoil off the pitch.

For the England regular after a year he had forgotten, it all came naturally.

Let’s not forget that Henderson was in the England squad back in March, an unused substitute in the 2-2 draw with Belgium at Wembley.

He captained the Three Lions in a friendly against Australia in October and then played in the Euro qualifiers against Italy and Malta.

During the Southgate era – and for some time before that – only injury kept Henderson out of England’s midfield.

He was regarded as «Mr. Reliable» in the engine room, rarely flamboyant but full of energy and trusted to make the right pass or set up a teammate. He is a professional model.

It was far from certain that Henderson would play a big role in Germany, but Southgate may have appreciated his extensive experience in the camp.
