Jack de Belin’s family angry at police investigating NRL star’s case: ‘There must be consequences now’

The family of Jack de Belin shot dead the police investigating the case against the football star and are happy that action is now being taken against the officer involved.

The former police officer was charged with perjury following an extensive investigation into de Belin’s sexual assault case heard in the Wollongong District Court in February 2020.

A Wollongong police officer, Detective Senior Constable Shawn Adams, was charged over evidence he gave during de Belin’s sexual assault trial.

The Wollongong trial ended in a jury, and at a second trial in Sydney, a jury found both de Belin and co-accused Callan Sinclair not guilty of one count of sexually assaulting a woman.

Jack de Belin’s parents and sister have expressed their anger at the police and the media.

Jack de Belin has been stood down by his NRL club St. George Illawarra during his two court cases.

De Belin was found not guilty in a Sydney court of one count of sexual assault after a jury failed to reach a verdict in the first trial in Wollongong.

«We feel this is a step in the right direction towards fully vindicating Jack,» Cathy, David and sister Erica de Belin wrote in a letter to the Sydney Morning Herald.

«We now hope that those responsible will finally be held accountable … and will continue to be held accountable.»

The court case has taken an incredible toll on the family, but they’re glad it’s settled.

«We are obviously disappointed and upset about the three years that have been taken away from Jack and our family throughout the process,» they wrote.

“Our family remains as close as ever, as does the support network of our extended family, friends and community.

“Now they have to have consequences and consequences for their actions. We as parents will continue to defend our children and their right to justice.”

Sinclair’s parents, Terry and Gai, also wrote to the Herald about their thoughts on the matter.

“We are relieved that some of what we have carried with us for several years has now come out into the public eye.

«We hope that the charges against the former officer will go to trial and that the accused will face the full force of the justice system.»
