Jake Paul vs Mike Tyson officially sanctioned as a pro fight

This summer’s meeting between YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul and former world champion Mike Tyson has been officially sanctioned as a professional bout.

It means the result of the fight, which is scheduled to take place in Texas on July 20, will appear on both their records.

Tyson, whose professional career ended in 2005, last fought in an exhibition fight in 2020 and will be 58 three weeks before he faces Paul.

Meanwhile, Paul defeated Ryan Bourland in his 10th pro fight in March.

«Mike Tyson and Jake Paul signed to fight each other with the desire to do so in a sanctioned professional fight that would have a definitive outcome,» said Nakisa Bidarian of MVP Promotions.

Tyson was the first heavyweight boxer to hold the WBA, WBC and IBF titles simultaneously in 1987, but his reign as unified champion came to a shock end in 1990 when he was defeated by Buster Douglas in one of the biggest upsets in boxing history.

Although he briefly regained the WBA and WBC titles in 1996, he then suffered a defeat to Evander Holyfield – the other ending as Tyson was disqualified for biting off part of Holyfield’s ear.

Tyson’s legal troubles included a rape conviction in 1992, for which he served three years of a six-year sentence, and in 1999 he served a third of a 12-month sentence for a roadside assault.

He returned to form to play his part in an eye-catching draw with former world champion Roy Jones Jr in 2020, and his bout with Paul will take place at Arlington’s AT&T Stadium, home of the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys, which has a seating capacity of 80,000.
