Labor MP suspended for whipping after sparking outrage with comments calling Israeli actions in Gaza ‘genocide’ on Holocaust Remembrance Day eve

Labor MP Kate Osamor has had her whip suspended after she accused Israel of genocide on the eve of Holocaust Remembrance Day.

An Edmonton MP has sparked outrage after she argued in her weekly newsletter to local members that Gaza should be added to the list of «recent genocides.»

As well as posting a photo of herself signing a Holocaust Education Trust memorial book in Westminster, she also made similar comments on Twitter/X: “Tomorrow is Holocaust Remembrance Day, the international day to remember the six million Jews murdered during the Holocaust. millions more murdered under the Nazi persecution of other groups and the more recent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and now Gaza.”

The House of Representatives, the Jewish Labor Movement and the Holocaust Educational Trust reacted furiously to the remarks.

A Labor source confirmed to MailOnline on Sunday evening that the Chief Whip had suspended Kate Osamora from the Parliamentary Labor Party pending an investigation.

Ms. Osamor posted an apology on social media Friday night, writing on Twitter/X: “Holocaust Memorial Day is a day to remember the 6 million Jews killed during the Holocaust and the genocide that has occurred since.

«I apologize for any offense caused by my reference to the ongoing humanitarian disaster in Gaza as part of this period of remembrance.»

A spokesman for the Campaign Against Antisemitism said: “The international definition of antisemitism adopted by the Labor Party lists comparing Israel to the Nazis as an example of antisemitism. This is what Kate Osamor effectively did.

“The Labor Party was right to move swiftly against Ms Osamora and we will be following the matter with interest.

«There are clearly some who wish to drag the party back to the darker days when views such as Ms Osamora’s were common, and they must fail.»

Shadow business secretary Jonathan Reynolds told Sky News it was not acceptable for Ms Osamor to juxtapose the Holocaust with current events in Gaza.

«What is happening in Gaza is clearly a humanitarian disaster that is recognized,» he said.

“But there are specific reasons why the Holocaust is seen as it is. On Holocaust Remembrance Day, it is important to remember this.

“And I understand that Kate apologized. The Chief Whip (Alan Campbell) was interviewed.

«There will be more talks next week, but of course we take anything in this space extremely seriously.»

Ms. Osamor, MP for Edmonton, apologized for her comments on social media late Friday.

Karen Pollock, executive director of the Holocaust Educational Trust, told the Jewish News that the «disgusting post» made by Ms. Osamor on Friday was «a malicious distortion of the truth, a painful insult to Holocaust survivors, and particularly disturbing. see on the eve of Holocaust Remembrance Day».

A spokesman for the Jewish Labor Movement added: “This is completely inappropriate.

“This week we commemorated the murder of six million Jews during the Holocaust – and those who perished in subsequent genocides, according to the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust.

Ms Osamor served in Jeremy Corbyn’s Shadow Cabinet as Shadow Secretary for International Development.

The former Labor leader was speaking about a series of pro-Palestinian marches that have taken place in London since the Palestinian militant group Hamas attacked Israel on October 7 last year.

The MP for Edmonton invited Mr Corbyn to address students at a «summer political school» last year, after which she said: «Without exception, students remain inspired and excited by Jeremy and the politics of hope he represents.»

Ms Osamor has been dogged by controversy before. In 2019, it was revealed that she had used House of Commons letterhead to write to a judge, begging him not to jail her son.

Ishmael Osamor, then 29, resigned as a Labor councilor after admitting having £2,500 worth of drugs, including cocaine and ecstasy, at Bestival in 2017.

He was ordered to perform 200 hours of community service. When confronted with this problem, a reporter from The Times threw a bucket of water and shouted, «I should have come in here with a … bat and smashed your face in.»

The Standards Commissioner found her guilty of two breaches of parliamentary rules, but she later claimed she was the target of a «witch hunt».

One Labor MP in her constituency said: “There is nothing more offensive than comparing the murder of six million Jews to the current conflict in Gaza.

“This isn’t the first problem we’ve had with Kate Osamor. It’s time for the party to step in and remove the whip. It’s really a shame.”
