Lalor Park fire: Man charged with murder after deadly house fire kills three children

A 28-year-old man has been charged with multiple murders following a weekend house fire in Sydney’s west that killed three young children.

A six-year-old, two-year-old and five-month-old died in a fire in Lalor Park in the early hours of Sunday morning. The man allegedly started the fire and obstructed rescue efforts.

The man, in custody at Westmead Hospital, has been charged with three counts of murder (DV), five counts of attempted murder (DV) and also destruction/damage to property with intent to endanger life (DV).

Neighbors and emergency services arrived at the fire at about 1:00 a.m. and rescued a six-year-old boy and a two-year-old boy from the flames, but they died a short time later.

The body of a five-month-old baby girl was found inside the house after firefighters extinguished the fire.

A 29-year-old woman and four children between the ages of four and 11 were taken to hospital.

The woman has since been released and the children remain in hospital in a stable condition.

Homicide detective Danny Doherty claimed the man deliberately kept police and neighbors out of the burning house while the children inside screamed.

Police have launched a wide-ranging investigation through Strike Force Carrbridge, which involves detectives from the National Crime Command’s Homicide Squad and officers from Blacktown Police Area Command, the Arson Squad and the Child Abuse Squad.

Neighbors told Daily Mail Australia that all three front rooms of the house were quickly engulfed in flames before power lines sparked and tore away from the house.

Forensic teams spent Sunday combing the charred property for evidence as the five-month-old girl’s body was removed.

Candles and bouquets of flowers were left outside the property this week.

One note, left alongside a bouquet of flowers, read: ‘May you rest in peace sweet innocent children.’

NSW Police Acting Superintendent Jason Pietruszka said the woman and other children were expected to make a full recovery.

«It’s devastating, there’s no other word for it.» It’s devastating for the community, the other kids who go to school with the kids,» said Senior Principal Pietruszka.

He said neighbors and police were «quite heroic» in trying to get into the house and that the actions of one neighbor saved other lives from being lost.

NSW Fire and Rescue Chief Adam Dewberry praised the firefighters.

«They went in, started firefighting operations, surveyed it, got the two kids out and handed them over to the paramedics who then proceeded with that emergency medical treatment.»

«There was heavy fire activity, flames coming out of both front windows and going up through the roof,» he said.

The man’s case was briefly mentioned in Parramatta Local Court on Thursday morning and his solicitor Ben Wilcox did not apply for bail.

The man remains in hospital and has not appeared on screen via AVL. His matter was adjourned until September.

Police have also taken out an AVO on behalf of the woman and the children who are alive.

The AVO prevents the man from contacting his alleged victims by getting within 500m of where they live or work, or from contacting any school or childcare center they attend.

He is also barred from possessing any firearm.
