Latrell Mitchell charged for a dangerous tackle but could play for the Blues in the Origin opener

Latrell Mitchell is available for selection for NSW in the State of Origin after escaping with a fine for a hip-drop attack in South Sydney’s NRL win over Parramatta.

Mitchell was subbed in the first half of the Rabbitohs’ 42-26 win on Saturday after being hauled out by a bunker to tackle Eels center Sean Russell.

He was charged with first-degree assault after a match review Sunday morning, but could get away with a $3,000 fine if he pleads guilty.

Mitchell’s Origin availability has been under discussion all season, after grumbling he wanted to prioritize playing for South Sydney.

But when Mitchell was asked on Saturday night if he was available for selection, interim Rabbitohs coach Ben Hornby said the full-back was.

«All our players are available. If NSW wants them, they are there,” Hornby said.

“I expect Latrell and Cody (Walker) to be a team. They are pretty good players and they showed before they should make the team.

“I know who I wouldn’t want to play against if I did.

Mitchell responded to Hornby’s comments by saying «100 per cent».

The 26-year-old is battling Zac Lomax, Jesse Ramien and Matt Burton for the NSW left-centre position.

He has not played Origin since 2021, when he was close to NSW’s best in their last series win.

Mitchell has since missed the 2022 and 2023 series while battling an injury.

Footy fans were frustrated by the decision to send Mitchell off in the match.

“How’s that hip drop? Absolute nonsense,” wrote one fan on X.

“Friday night Val Holmes was doomed, now Trell Mitchell is doomed. What’s going on with our great game,» said another.

Footy commentator Warren Smith was also in disbelief at the decision, saying: «Latrell Mitchell is outraged. He can’t believe it and frankly neither can you or I.»
