Liverpool have confirmed that midfielder Thiago Alcantara will leave the club at the end of the season.

The Spain international will leave when his current deal expires, having spent four successful years on Merseyside since joining from Bayern Munich in 2020.

The 33-year-old won the FA Cup and Community Shield during his time at the club, making 98 appearances for the Reds.

Subscription to XThiago has penned an emotional message to Liverpool fans, thanking them for their support over the last four years.

He wrote: “Appreciation and gratitude. Those are the two words that come to mind on the day I have to say goodbye to you all, Reds.

‘Grateful too. Thank you for the opportunity to be a part of this city, this club and this community.

“The non-stop support I’ve had from day one has been unbelievable: the cheers at Anfield, the chants at The Kop… amazing, overwhelming. A very unique fan base for a unique club.

“These past four years have been a learning time for me and my family. Some wins, some losses, but without a doubt a life changing experience.

Teammates, coaches, staff and club staff: you were all part of it. And to the fans, I have no words. Just know that you will forever have my deepest gratitude.

In a statement on the club’s website, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp also paid tribute to the central midfielder.

Klopp said: “Before he even came to Liverpool, I believed that if you really loved football, it made a lot of sense to watch Thiago Alcantara play.

«Technically he is so good. A talent who could play in any team in the world and it was a privilege to have him with us.

“I already knew a lot about him as a footballer before he got here – what he’s done at Barcelona and Bayern Munich, how could you not? – and I couldn’t be happier when he decided to take on a new challenge with us.

“From that moment on I got to see him up close and all I can say is ‘Wow’. Most importantly, he was part of a new story and helped us grow as a team with his special qualities.

“Now he and his family are going in a new direction and we can only wish them well. Wherever he plays next, I’ll be happy to watch. An in-game artist who will paint only the most beautiful pictures.”
