Major development after popular surfer Guy Haymes was found with serious head injuries at his Manly flat


A man has been charged with murder after a popular surfer was found on the unit with head injuries before he died in hospital.

Police were called to the unit on Pittwater Road in Manly, Sydney’s Northern Beaches, where 59-year-old Guy Haymes was found with serious head injuries on February 27.

He was treated at the scene but died in hospital a fortnight later.

Detectives immediately opened an investigation into the death.

A 41-year-old man was arrested in Greenacre in Sydney’s west on Saturday night.

Police were called to the unit on Pittwater Road in Manly, on Sydney’s northern beaches, where 59-year-old Guy Haymes (pictured) was allegedly assaulted on February 27.

He was charged with murder, two counts of taking or detaining a person with intent to gain an advantage, taking/detaining a person with intent to gain an advantage, and capturing or detaining a person causing actual bodily harm.

He was refused bail to appear in Parramatta Local Court on Sunday.

Mr Haymes was a popular surfer known between the northern beaches of Sydney and Wollongong and earned the nickname ‘The Creature’.

He grew up learning to surf on the northern beaches with his family, who are popular in the local surfing scene.

He is believed to be part of a small group of locals who started surfing at Avalon Beach, which is now one of Sydney’s most sought after spots.

The police suspect that he knew the attacker.

His brother Mark Haymes said he felt empty and was searching for answers.

«The guy was fun-loving, outgoing and got along with everyone,» he told reporters.

“Our whole family is in shock and disbelief that his life was cut short – in such a brutal way.

“He was always a really good uncle with my kids – they loved him.

“Why would anyone actually want to hurt someone as badly as they did… that’s the hardest thing to deal with.

«If anyone has any information please come forward because our whole family needs closure.»

On Thursday, Detective Superintendent Patrick Sharkey said detectives were now appealing to the public for more information.

Neighbours, friends and potential relatives of the person involved who may have heard anything about the incident are urged to contact police.

Police are also appealing for any CCTV or dash cam footage from the Manly area from the evening of February 27.
