Meghan Markle is being dubbed Nigeria’s «new princess» by fans after the Duchess of Sussex was hailed as «Ada Mazi» when she donned an ornate gold sash during a naming ceremony attended by three royals in Lagos.

Meghan Markle has been showered with love from Nigerian fans who welcomed their ‘new princess’ during the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s visit to the country.

The mother of two was on Sunday honored as “Ada Mazi” – apparently a title of respect meaning “daughter of an aristocrat” – of the ancient kingdom of Arochukwu.

Three kings – His Eminence Engr Eberechukwu Oji, Eze Aro of the Ancient Kingdom of Arochukwu, Igwe Alfred Achebe, Obi of Onitsha and Great Olu Of Warri Kingdom – attended the appointment ceremony.

And supporters from the West African country, where Prince Harry and his wife enjoyed a 72-hour whistle-stop tour, took to social media to send their congratulations.

“Princess Meghan first! Daughter of Doria of our blood,” wrote one in a spirited post on X.

Many also noted how significant the occasion was, given that the royals rarely leave their home state unless it’s for a very special event or guest.

In a TikTok video shared by Arochukwu Network, a beaming Meghan can be seen giving a speech of thanks.

«Thank you very much,» she told the audience. “I’m very grateful, I’m very humbled.

«And today is Mother’s Day, so I think it’s appropriate – because of course we miss our children, I miss my children – it feels really good to be in the motherland…

Meghan wore a gold sash depicting the title of Ada Mazi and also held a cloth depicting the insignia of «Oru-Arochukwu».

One poster on the Nairaland forum in 2017 explained its symbolism: “Omu and Omu Aro are not interchangeable for clarity and better understanding.

“Omu is a young palm leaf or leaves or a knot, tied from that Eze Aro leaf, while Omu Aro is the insignia or emblem of the Eze Aro’s authority.

«The Omu, as we have it anywhere on Aro documents, monuments, or wrappers, has an Omu leaf tied in the middle, one hand giving it and the other receiving it.»

Arochukwu is one of the “foremost ancient kingdoms in Africa” as reported by local newspaper Punch and is located in the north of Abia State.

Meghan’s white top was matched with a traditional Nigerian aso oke, a patterned handwoven fabric wrapped around the waist and often reserved for special occasions. It was a gift from a group of women the day before.
