Michael Bublé vs. polar bear: the singer recalls a near-death struggle

Now that the holidays are over, Michael Bublé is no longer singing about having a merry little Christmas. Instead, he recalls a hellish winter scene where he was nearly attacked by a group of polar bears.

The «Home» and «Everything» singer was a guest on «The Kelly Clarkson Show,» where Clarkson asked him about his battle with death. Bublé said he just finished filming the 2003 survival drama «The Snow Walker» and celebrated with the cast in Churchill, Manitoba, a town along the Hudson Bay coast in the rugged Canadian tundra. During the wrap party, he and movie star Barry Pepper got drunk and decided to run away to the beach.

«And the guy who lived there started cursing at us and yelling, I mean, screaming bloody murder,» Bublé said. “We didn’t realize we were running to our certain death because there were polar bears all down the beach.

«They’re the most aggressive — God, but they’re so cuddly,» Bublé joked, prompting laughter from the audience. Clarkson was referring to the Coca-Cola bears iconic ads.

«Sometimes I think how close I was to lunch as a little polar bear,» he said.

«Snow Walker,» which also starred «Succession» and «LA Confidential» actor James Cromwell, would underperform commercially but found quiet acclaim among critics, especially for Pepper’s performance. Although it was unclear how close Bublé and Pepper were to the attack, the Canadian singer has not performed on the big screen since. Shortly thereafter, he starred in several small roles in various sitcoms and an episode in the long-running soap opera «Days of Our Lives.»

After the film, the Burnaby, BC-born singer gained popularity with his 2005 album «It’s Time.» Two years later, the singer’s «Call Me Irresponsible» earned him his first Grammy Award for Traditional Pop Vocal Album. Since then, Bublé has collaborated with a number of musicians, won several more Grammy and Juno Awards, and toured his music around the world.

Bublé also gained popularity for its seasonal serenades. Known as the «King of Christmas,» Bublé told podcast host Steven Bartlett «CEO’s diary” that he has been devoting his own classic since before he became a professional singer.

Last month, the singer announced that he wanted to change the direction of his career. «I did the same thing, it was cyclical,» he said Bartlett. «I feel like I’m at this point in my life, in my career, where I want to do something else.»

Although he plans to continue singing, he added that he feels «the need to express myself in a different way,» but did not elaborate on any plans or projects.

Maybe it’s time for the singer to return to the big screen?
