Mystik Dan is looking for a second triple crown

It had rained at Pimlico Racecourse on Saturday, just hours before The Kentucky Derby winner Mystik Dan goes for Triple Crown victory. The weather could play a significant role as showers are expected to continue throughout the afternoon and could create a muddy track.

A historical moment in the making

If Mystik Dan wins the Preakness, he would be the first horse to win both the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness since Justify in 2018. The win would set up a rare and historic opportunity to win the Triple Crown at next month’s Belmont Stakes.

Key rivals in the Preakness

Mystik Dan will face stiff competition from several notable challengers:

  • Imaginationtrained by Bob Baffert
  • Grasping freedomtrained by Brad Cox
  • Tuscan goldtrained by Chad Brown

Baffert was originally scheduled to enter two horses in the race, but the morning line favorite, Muth, was scratched earlier in the week with a fever. Despite this, competition remains strong.

Post time and tracking information

The Preakness Stakes is scheduled to start at 6:50 PM ET. Coverage begins on NBC at 4:30 PM ET, and the race can also be streamed on Peacock.

Odds and predictions

As of Saturday morning, Mystik Dan was a 3-1 favorite to win. Catching Freedom and Tuscan Gold each had odds of 7-2, while Imagination was 9-2.

Trainer stats

Mystik Dan trainer Kenny McPeek recognizes the challenge ahead. “Catching Freedom trained really well before the Derby,” McPeek said. “He is a very nice horse. And Bob, he wouldn’t bring a horse unless it was a good horse, and Chad also got a horse that came from the Louisiana Derby. Yes, it’s not a given.»

McPeek decided to enter Mystik Dan in the Preakness despite the colt’s gutsy victory by a nose in the Kentucky Derby. The decision reflects a trend as more trainers hesitate to run the Derby-Preakness double, raising questions about the prestige of the middle jewel. The future of Pimlico Race Course

This year is the last Preakness at the current Pimlico racetrack, with demolition scheduled to begin early next year. The 150th run in 2025 will still be run on the track during construction. The event will then move to Laurel Park in 2026 before returning to a redeveloped Pimlico in 2027.

Looking ahead to the Belmont Stakes

The last section of the Triple Crown, Belmont Stakes, will be held on June 8. Due to renovations at Belmont Park in New York, the race will be held at Saratoga Race Course in upstate New York for the first time. Construction at Belmont Park is expected to continue through 2025, potentially making Saratoga the site of the Belmont Stakes for two consecutive years.

Currently, the New York races are held at the Aqueduct in Queens, which hosted the Triple Crown finals from 1963-67, when Belmont Park was last renovated.

Information is collected from NBC New York and Yahoo Sports.
