Three people are in a critical condition following a horror crash between a car and a B-double lorry on a major motorway.

The crash happened on the D-Aguilar Highway near the Nanango Tarong Road junction in Nanango, northwest of Brisbane before 6am on Thursday.

The semi-trailer driver, aged in his 50s, suffered minor injuries and was taken to Kingaroy Hospital in a stable condition by paramedics.

The highway was closed in both directions south of Nanango and motorists were told to avoid the area.

The B-double lorry was found down on an embankment near the motorway when emergency services arrived at the scene.

Several trailers pulled by a truck managed to stay on the highway.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman told Daily Mail Australia that three people suffered life-threatening injuries.

A spokeswoman confirmed the truck driver suffered lacerations and was taken to hospital for treatment.

It is not yet known whether there were three people traveling in the car.
