Nicole Kidman admits she ‘broke down’ when Jodie Foster took over her role in Panic Room – amid divorce from Tom Cruise after 11 years: ‘I was in a really bad place’

Nicole Kidman has openly admitted she «broke down» when Jodie Foster took over her role in Panic Room during her divorce from Tom Cruise after 11 years of marriage.

Nicole, 56, and Jodie, 61, were attending The Hollywood Reporter’s Drama Actresses Roundtable, which was released Wednesday, when they began talking about the upheaval.

Nicole – who recently stripped down for a steamy sex scene with Zac Efron – was originally cast as Meg Altman’s mother in 2002’s Panic Room.

However, she had to leave the project due to a knee injury which led to her being replaced by Jodie.

Jodie discussed the falsehoods of competition between leading actresses when talking about replacing the Australian actress in the film, saying: ‘There’s a misconception that female actors are somehow on each other or they don’t like each other or whatever.

“Even this year when I go to different events (for Nyad), it’s always so nice because the women really feel that they want each other to succeed. Like, Nicole, I took over the movie you had to leave.’

Nicole replied, “Yes! And thank you. I was really bad. I thought, «I have a disorder.» And Jodie took over, thank God.”

It was interesting timing, as the project began filming in January 2001, which was seven months before her divorce from Tom Cruise, now 61, was finalized.
