Novak Djokovic and his wife Jelena exchanged harsh words at the French Open before sealing a stunning comeback

Novak Djokovic was spotted having a heated conversation with his wife Jelena during his five-set thriller with Francisco Cerundula.

The Serbian great – who has since withdrawn from Wednesday’s quarter-final against Casper Ruud with a knee injury – was again taken to five sets as his up-and-down French Open campaign continues as he went the distance with Lorenzo Musetti in a clash that ended after three o’clock in the morning sunday morning

Djokovic entered the competition as the reigning champion, but at this year’s French Open he was unable to consistently show the form he has displayed throughout his stunning career.

On Monday, with his title defense back on the line, Djokovic went 2-0 down in the decisive fifth set but was visibly upset after conceding a point at 30-30.

He then returned to pick up more balls and start another serve before addressing his family in the box at Court Philippe-Chatrier.

Cameras captured the tense exchange, with Djokovic angrily gesticulating with his hands and shouting at his team.

His wife Jelena can then be seen standing up in the box on the stand, answering her husband.

Jelena Djokovic, 37, is a self-proclaimed «curious soul» and founder of the Novak Djokovic Foundation, which aims to help children reach their full potential by investing in early childhood development, particularly early childhood education.

The couple started dating in 2005 before getting engaged in 2013.

Jelena is a strong supporter of children and last October she spoke at the International Conference on Child Safety.

After a few seconds, the exchange ended and Djokovic returned to what he does best – pulling victory from the jaws of defeat.

He eventually sealed his place in the quarterfinals with a 6-3 win in the fifth to make it 6-1, 5-7, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 before withdrawing from the tournament on Tuesday.

He was due to face Ruud of Norway, who had gone four sets in his last two matches after going five sets against Alejandro Davidovich Fokan.

By securing a place in Wednesday’s round of 16, Djokovic also earned another record to add to his long list of incredible feats.

He claimed his 370th Grand Slam victory on Monday, surpassing Roger Federer’s 369 points, which he tied with Musetti for the record.

Crushed by a right knee injury, a ferocious court condition, down two sets to one and a break, the 37-year-old survived by an almost supernatural force of will.

At four hours and 39 minutes, it was Djokovic’s longest match at the French Open, but it didn’t come without a toll on his body.

He revealed he would have tests on his knee on Tuesday and was considering pulling out of the match.

«I’ve had a little discomfort in my right knee for the last couple of weeks,» he revealed after another incredible victory.

“But I’ve been playing around with it and to this day no problems. Of course, the late finish a few days ago didn’t help.

“I slipped in the third game of the second set, which is one of the many times I slipped and fell today. It affected the knee.

“At one point I didn’t know if I should continue, to be honest. I was given medication and after the third set I asked for more.

“That was the maximum dose that kicked in after 30 to 45 minutes, which was just before the end of the fourth when things really started to pick up.

«Basically, the entire fifth set was almost pain-free. However, the effect of the drugs will not last very long. After the match, the doctor and I did some tests. Some positive news but also some concerns, so we’ll see tomorrow.»
