Judo champion and Olympic star Maricet Espinosa Gonzalez has died aged 34 after reportedly suffering a heart attack.

Gonzalez reportedly underwent breast augmentation surgery on January 21, just days before the tragedy.

She was a former top five at the 2011 World Championships and was a two-time Pan American champion before retiring in 2017.

«La Mole», as she was called, represented Cuba at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

There she defeated Nepal’s Phupa Lhama Khatri in the first round of the women’s 63 kg competition.

Gonzalez – who won two silver medals at the 2016 Continental Judo Championships – reportedly underwent breast augmentation surgery days before her tragic death

However, Gonzalez lost in the next round to Israeli Yarden Gerbia, her most frequent opponent during her career.

She also won two silver medals at the 2016 Continental Judo Championships.
