Paris 2024: We must surpass the performance of 1996 — Sports Minister

The Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Owan Enoh has stressed the need for Team Nigeria to beat their best Olympic record achieved at the 1996 Atlanta Games.

The minister made the call during a ministerial strategic technical meeting on the preparation of Team Nigeria for the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games held at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja on Thursday.

The meeting, which brought together sports federations tied to the Olympics, was to map out a comprehensive plan and technical training programs for Team Nigeria to excel in Paris. The plans are expected to be analyzed by the Federation and Elite Athletes Department (FEAD) and the Ministerial Stage Performance Committee to ensure that Team Nigeria is on track to win medals.

Enoh said both domestic and international preparations are key to the success of Team Nigeria.

“Beating our best Olympic performance is a goal we should strive to achieve. We must build on our past successes and strive for excellence in Paris 2024.

«The combination of domestic camping and foreign training tours is essential. It ensures that our athletes are well prepared and ready to compete at the highest level,” the minister said.

The Sporting Tribune reports that home camps will be officially opened in Abuja, Lagos, Bayelsa and Ibadan over the weekend, followed by overseas training tours with USA, Germany, Spain and Italy among the top destinations earmarked.

The plan discussed during this meeting is designed to provide athletes with the best possible preparation, use of state-of-the-art facilities and expert coaching at local and international levels.
