Paul Merson claims Erik the Hag should be knighted if Man United win the FA Cup… as he insists it will take a ‘miracle’ to beat Man City at Wembley

Paul Merson insisted Erik ten Hag deserves a knighthood if he can lead Man United to victory against Man City in the FA Cup final later this month.

The Dutchman has come under increasing pressure at Old Trafford in recent weeks, with Arsenal United three points off a European place with two games remaining after Sunday’s defeat.

However, the only saving grace for the Ten Hag in his second season at the club was his side’s performances in the FA Cup.

In March, his side completed a dramatic comeback against Liverpool to book their place in the semi-finals before going on to dispatch Championship Coventry on penalties.

Their biggest test awaits on the 25th when they take on their rowdy neighbors in a bid to avenge their defeat in last season’s final.

Pep Guardiola’s side have been at their best in recent times and Merson insisted United may need some divine intervention to win at Wembley.

“I mean if they beat Man City in the FA Cup final, if we look at the last few results, we look at Palace, he should be knighted. Merson said on Sky Sports.

“He should be knighted. I’m not exaggerating. He should be knighted because that would be a miracle. It would be a miracle if they beat Man City.»

United currently sit eighth in the table, leaving the club on course for their worst ever top-flight finish in the Premier League era.

There has never been a negative goal difference for Manchester United (at the end of the Premier League season), but even eighth.

“I mean eighth in the league… It’s still like sitting here today in what I think is the biggest club in the world. You know, still one of the biggest clubs in the world.’
