Perth residents made 21,716 aircraft noise complaints in the year – 40 per cent of the national total

A single Perth resident was responsible for more than 21,000 aircraft noise complaints over the Western Australian capital last year.

The series’ 21,716 silent protests accounted for 40 percent of the 51,589 aircraft noise complaints filed nationwide in 2023.

This equates to one objection being filed every 25 minutes, or about 59 per day, for an entire year.

The unknown whiner topped the list of five people who filed 30,543 complaints during the period — about 60 percent of the national total.

Airservices Australia monitors noise at Brisbane, Cairns, Canberra, Gold Coast, Sydney, Melbourne, Essendon, Adelaide and Perth airports.

Its Noise and Flight Path Monitoring System (NFPMS) operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, collecting data from every plan flying in and out of every facility.

Last year there were more than twice as many complaints as in 2022 – 51,589 against 25,178.

«These are people who don’t suffer the consequences of their policies, who have never lived under a busy flight path, who don’t know the extreme distress and harm caused, and who don’t recognize the research into damage caused by aircraft noise,» they wrote.

“For me, it’s not just a matter of several flights every night preventing proper sleep, but also the injustice and stonewalling I’ve faced trying to make my voice heard by those who treat citizens like statistics.

«There is something profoundly irritating and deeply offensive about the intrusiveness of the booming, whining, booming crescendo of aircraft noise that interrupts your life.»

NFPMS uses long-term noise monitors located in communities and is the world’s largest and most geographically widespread system of its type, according to Airservices Australia.

Some monitors have been around for over 20 years.

The inquiry into aircraft noise is carried out by the Parliamentary Committee on Rural and Regional Affairs and the Transport Reference Committee.

The investigation examines the impact and mitigation of aircraft noise on residents and businesses in capital cities and regional cities.
