Rasmus Hojlund was benched for Manchester United’s final home game of the season against Newcastle.

The Danish forward has scored just one goal in his last eight Premier League games, having scored six in seven before that.

His worrying form comes as the Red Devils have also struggled for results, with just one win in their last nine games – against relegated Sheffield United.

United have an FA Cup final against Man City later this month and reports suggest the club are controlling Hojlund’s minutes ahead of their most important game of the season.

However, Roy Keane told Sky Sports that manager Erik ten Hag may be «sending a message to the board» with his decision to drop Hojlund.

He said: “Maybe the manager is sending a message to the board that he doesn’t have many options.

“Sometimes I think managers do it in a few games to show they need reinforcements. Obviously he hopes to be ready for the cup final.»

Manchester United currently lack depth up front, with Hojlund still adjusting to English football and Marcus Rashford taking a big dip in goals from 30 last season to just eight in all competitions this term.

The Hag selected Bruno Fernandes as the central man for his game with Newcastle, with the Portugal international returning to action after missing the last two games.

Manchester United are expected to have a busy summer following the arrival of minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

Going into the clash with Newcastle, the Red Devils are eighth in the table, three points behind the Magpies in sixth – although Eddie Howe’s side have a much higher goal difference of +22 compared to United’s -4.
