Raye lights up the stage at Radio 1’s Big Weekend and admits she ‘didn’t think she was ready’ to perform to thousands of fans

Raye lit up the stage at Radio 1’s Big Weekend in Luton on Saturday.

Following the success of her debut album My 21st Century Blues, the 26-year-old singer recently broke the record for most BRITs won in one night with five to her name and treated fans to a medley of her hits at the annual festival.

But just after working her way through songs like Ice Cream Man, Secrets and her signature track Escapism, she admitted to the crowd that she had some self-doubt.

She said, «I didn’t think I was ready!»

The acclaimed pop star opted for a white floral number embellished with roses for her performance and kept her hair in her usual black bouffant.

Midway through her set, nodding to her song Worth It, she said: ‘Aren’t we all just looking for someone who’s worth it?

“I didn’t even rehearse that, I just said it! We’ll end it now.’

The Prada singer was backed by her band during the performance and at one point wanted to ‘hear it for the strings’ as she made sure the crowd recognized them.

The stage for the show was set with a dramatic backdrop of a white curtain where color played a leading role.

Raye – real name Rachel Keen – had her name spelled out in white lights above and all her backing singers were glowing the same color.

Raye, 26, had a huge BRIT success earlier this year, breaking records once held by the likes of Adele and Harry Styles.

Raye also holds the record for the most BRITs won at a single ceremony, a record previously held at four, jointly held by Blur (1995), Adele (2016) and Harry Styles (2023).

Raye has been nominated eight times – the most ever for a single artist in a year – including two nominations for Song of the Year, for Escapism, which won the title, and for Prada.

In her Best New Artist acceptance speech, Raye said of her fresh start: “I have to thank my mom and dad, who are also part of my team, and my grandma. Yes grandma! In a way, I feel like a new artist. I released my first song when I was 15, my first mixtape when I was 16, don’t go and listen to it because it’s not that good anymore.

But I feel like a new artist, I have to start again. The artist I was three years ago would not believe what she sees today. I’m my own boss now, I’m in control. Thank you!’
