Archie Miller served as Rhode Island’s sixth man on the court Saturday against his former team, Dayton.

While ‘coaching’ from the ‘sideline’, Miller walked right into the path of Flyers guard Koby Brea as he picked off a pass near the Rams bench.

In the end, it didn’t affect the play as Brea quickly picked himself up and passed the ball to teammate DaRon Holmes II, who dunked the ball with ease.

Online, some felt that Miller should have been ejected for getting so close to the action as a head coach, unintentional or not. Officials merely gave Miller a warning for his actions.

The play also didn’t matter much in the context of the entire game, as Dayton won handily, 96-62.

Miller is undoubtedly an animated coach, but why has he been so far from his team’s bench?

Brea could easily run into Miller and somehow avoid the Rhode Island head coach

It is common for coaches to move a bit away from the bench when there is a game at the opposite end of the court to shout instructions to their players.

It’s not common to be almost inside the 3-point line, especially when the action is coming right at you. If Miller and Brea collided, it would be a much bigger problem for the Atlantic 10.

Saturday’s game also marked Miller’s return to Dayton as Rhode Island’s head coach.

Miller coached the Flyers from 2011-17 and did so well that he left as head coach for Indiana.

The Hoosiers underachieved under Miller, and he’s at the Rams’ helm through 2022.
