Rory McIlroy played HUNGOVER at the Canadian Open after celebrating his caddy’s birthday – two weeks after filing for divorce from Erica Stoll

Rory McIlroy has incredibly revealed he was hungover during his first round at the RBC Canadian Open – because he had celebrated his caddy’s birthday the night before.

McIlroy got off to a slow start and didn’t birdie the front nine, but found an extra gear after the turn and shot an impressive 4-under 66 to finish the day tied for third.

He told reporters after the round that he felt «groggy» after celebrating Harry Diamond’s birthday – Diamond is McIlroy’s childhood friend.

It is McIlroy’s first appearance since the PGA Championship, where it was revealed days before the start that he had filed for divorce from Erica Stoll after seven years of marriage. Diamond was McIlroy’s best man at the wedding.

Ironically, McIlroy hit a wayward tee shot into the hospitality tent on the 17th hole.

«Obviously I hit it into hospitality and some guy yelled, ‘You need a wristband to get in here!'» «So that was pretty funny,» McIlroy said.

Incredibly, the Northern Irishman said it was the first time he had seen the back nine of the course.

«I played blind nine. I didn’t see the back nine. He only played the first nine in the pro-am. I was pretty happy to get out of there at even par and not make a bogey.

But once I got those nine holes out of the way, I knew there were some chances on the front and I probably played a lot better on that front. Four birdies, no bogeys, it was a good day.’
