Rory McIlroy tops field for RBC Canadian Open ten days after shock divorce from Erica Stoll … as Scottie Scheffler skips competition

Rory McIlroy highlights the field for the 2024 RBC Canadian Open at Hamilton Golf & Country Club in Hamilton, Ontario, May 30-June 2.

However, world number one Scottie Scheffler’s name is missing from the roster as the PGA Tour heads north of the border.

Both made headlines at the PGA Championship in Kentucky for reasons unrelated to the sport.

Three days before the start of the Valhalla Championship, McIlroy shocked fans by filing for divorce from his wife of seven years, Erica Stoll.

After going public with their relationship in 2014, McIlroy and Stoll became engaged the following December and married in April 2017. On 31 August 2020, the couple welcomed a daughter, Poppy Kennedy.

An inside source later told US Weekly that «Erica was lonely in their marriage,» while another told People that the Northern Irishman was «trying to find himself and get back to winning ways» after the split.

On the other hand, Scheffler made headlines on May 17 when he was arrested in Louisville and charged with second-degree assault, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving and failure to obey traffic signals from an officer.

The arrest occurred early in the morning while he was trying to get inside Valhalla to make time to tee off. However, he was released a few hours later and received a standing ovation on the field in the second round.

«This morning I followed the instructions of the officers,» Scheffler wrote of the arrest. “It was a very chaotic situation, understandably in light of the tragic accident that happened earlier, and there was a big misunderstanding of what I thought was being asked of me.

“I never intended to ignore any of the instructions. I hope to put it aside and focus on golf today.”

Scheffler finished the tournament in a four-man playoff for eighth place. Meanwhile, McIlroy and five others finished 12th behind them.

Whether or not Scheffler’s absence from the Canadian Open is related to the arrest remains in question.

As for McIlroy, he’s looking to add a third Canadian Open title to his resume. He won his first in 2019 and won his second northern title in 2022.
