Smith’s lawyers said the drug package was allegedly sent to him by a friend as a thank you for helping him buy a car, and Smith did not know what it contained.

Mr Smith’s lawyer, Edward Pangkahili, said Mr Smith cried in prison and was very stressed after the allegations, The Advertiser reports.

Smith was initially charged with drug possession, which carries a maximum sentence of 12 years, but was later charged with drug trafficking.

Before a police news conference Monday, one of Smith’s attorneys, Sienna Karmana, said his client tried to avoid arrest «because he was scared,» with police firing two warning shots into the air before he was apprehended.

“The police said he tried to run away but the police got him back. They shot in the air, he was surprised, then he fell and then the police got him,” she said.

Just weeks ago, he was enjoying the globe-trotting life as a newlywed when he tied the knot with his wife Tracy Ijusa after meeting on Tinder.

He proposed in Bali in October and the couple married in late December in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, where Ms Ijusa is from.

Photos from the day show the couple making love at the Lenana Mount Hotel. while other photos show them visiting the Maasai Mara National Reserve.

The couple then returned to Bali and the footage shows the pair enjoying themselves on the Indonesian island since February.

A life of luxury and hotel pools now seems like a distant memory for Smith, who faces years behind bars in the prison that housed Schapelle Corby and the Bali Nine.

Mr Pangkahila disclosed that his client’s wife was struggling to cope with the arrest.

“Mrs Ijusa cried at the police station when she found out.

Mr Smith is currently being held in an overcrowded concrete cell at the Denpasar police headquarters with only a bucket used as a toilet.

Officers will continue questioning Mr Smith on Monday, according to his lawyer, who insisted the meeting would not be an «interrogation».

Mrs. Ijusa is expected to return the same day to support her husband.

Speaking at a news conference at Port Lincoln Hospital on Friday, Premier Peter Malinauskas said Mr Smith was receiving community support.

«We are not involved as a state government, but I understand that the Commonwealth is seeking to provide consular assistance to the gentleman in question,» Mr Malinauskas said.

“The allegations are serious – they would be serious in Australia, but particularly serious in Bali.

Smith struggled with alcoholism earlier in his life, which led to his children cutting off contact with him and his marriage falling apart.

He said his world changed after meeting Mrs Ijusa.

«I’ve had an interesting last twelve years,» Mr. Smith said in the video.

“Chronic alcoholic, at rock bottom. You couldn’t drink more than me.

“I saw no way out and I should probably be dead to be honest. The kids don’t talk to me anymore.

“But then in the most bizarre of circumstances, I met this girl in Nairobi on a Tinder date and I’ve been in Bali ever since.

‘Now I love life. This girl gives me motivation to do everything. She is my life now.”
