Sebastian Broderick, winner of the 1985 Under-17 World Cup, is dead

Sebastian Broderick-Imasuen, the renowned coach who led the Golden Eaglets to victory in the first Under-17 World Cup in 1985, has died.

Broderick-Imasuen died on Wednesday, January 3, 2023.

The late Nigerian coach was on life support at the Benin University Hospital for over a year.

Brodericks-Imasuen, 85, was diagnosed with an ischemic stroke in December 2022 and was receiving treatment before he breathed his last.

Born on July 9, 1938, Sebastian Imasuen Broderick started his football journey as a player for the Electricity Corporation of Nigeria Football Club of Lagos (ECN FC) from 1962 to 1970.

His achievements included winning the national Challenge Cup in 1965 and representing Nigeria in the 1968 Olympic team.

Transitioning from the field to coaching, Broderick attended various coaching courses.

In 1973, he led the Mid-Western U-13 team to a gold medal at the first National Sports Festival in Lagos, heralding his future success.

The pinnacle of Broderick-Imasuen’s coaching career came in 1985 when he took over as head coach of the U16 national team at the Kodak-FIFA Under-16 World Cup in China.

Under his leadership, the team became victorious and secured the trophy for Nigeria and Africa with a 2-0 triumph over West Germany in the final.

His influence extended to the Super Eagles where he served as assistant coach during Clemens Westerhof’s tenure as technical advisor.

Broderick-Imasuen’s coaching legacy has also touched clubs such as Bendel Insurance, El Kanemi Warriors and Udoji United.

Broderick-Imasuen, who had been struggling with the disease for a long time, was being treated at the University Hospital in Benin until his death.
