Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico was shot and wounded in an assassination attempt this afternoon shortly after he left a meeting of parliamentarians.

Mr Fico was taken to hospital after being shot in the abdomen shortly after attending a government meeting in Handlova, about 150 kilometers north-east of the capital Bratislava.

Opposition MPs and journalists ‘accused of shooting’

Slovak media reported that opposition MPs and journalists were accused of shooting Mr Fico by his political colleagues at a time of tension in the country’s parliament.

Mr. Fico (pictured) was shot several times today after attending a government meeting in the town of Handlová, about 150 kilometers northeast of the capital Bratislava.

According to Slovak daily Denník N, otherwise known as Denník N, one of Fico’s colleagues from Smer, Richard Glück, told opposition MPs that it was their fault, while the Slovak politician blamed journalists and referred to them as ‘disgusting bastards’.

A rush among world leaders to condemn the attack

World leaders including Rishi Sunak were quick to condemn the attack on Mr Fico.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also posted statements on their social media accounts.

In a statement provided to Denník N, a government spokeswoman said:

At the moment, he is being transported by helicopter to Banská Bystrica, because the journey to Bratislava would take too long due to the need for emergency intervention.
